Part 23. When Healing Becomes Habit
A series about starting over gently, honestly, and without apology
Healing is a journey, but in that path of healing, there comes a day when healing stops feeling like a destination, a moment when healing no longer feels like a finish line you’re struggling to attain. That moment of a silent shift; healing becomes a quiet rhythm you live and move in. You no longer see healing as a destination. Rather, it becomes a habitation. This is the best position to be in, the best way of living. When healing becomes a habit.
This lifestyle is usually not a loud one, neither is it a dramatic one. It’s one habit that’s not always seen by others. However, the truth remains; that habit is real.
What Does It Mean for Healing to Become a Habit?
When healing becomes a habit, you go to bed choosing peace, and when you wake up, you choose peace, again. Forgiveness becomes something you give repeatedly, even when the offender never asks for it. You live in the understanding that choosing healing is beneficial to you. You know that unforgiveness is tantamount to putting yourself in bondage while the one who caused your pain lives a free life. Making healing a lifestyle is a choice to live in freedom, a choice to breathe again, and trust again.
When healing becomes a habit, you stop striving to be whole, just because you have come to the realization that you’re already whole in Christ Jesus. You’re complete in Him. Colossians 2:10.
You stop struggling to earn love, because love is something you’re learning to live from. You’re already loved. You’re not struggling to be loved, nor to give love. Romans 5:8; 1John 4:19; 1John 3:1.
Rehearsing your pain becomes a thing of the past because release has become your new language. You stop living in fear of the next fall, you’re not afraid of taking risks because you’ve learned the way back to grace. Your wound no longer leads you. Rather, your steps are led by wisdom, compassion, and gentleness. To you, healing is no longer a destination to arrive at, it’s a habitation. You care less about who hurts you, just because you care more about who holds you now. When you make healing your lifestyle, you quietly discover the miracle you never knew you lived in. You realize healing is no longer something that happens to you. Rather, healing itself has become you.
This lifestyle is possible when you have Jesus Christ living on your inside. Even when you go through tough times that end up breaking you, here's one important truth you need to realize: Jesus has always been there the whole time.
At your breaking point, He was there rooting for you; quietly cheering you even when you didn’t notice. In your breaking, He was there, quietly holding what you thought was shattering beyond repair. He was there in the silence, whispering in frequencies your ear didn’t pick but your spirit could feel. He was there in your scar, redeeming your story, not erasing it. In your recalibration process, He was there, guiding you back into alignment, even when life had knocked you off the path. He was there with you in every tear you shed, in every sigh you released, in every pain that pierced your heart. He was there in every step you took forward; He was there with you in the rhythm of restoration.
We don’t always notice Him, we don’t always name Him, we don’t even always understand Him, but He has always been there. I know this because His word in Matthew 28:20 says “..... surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” NIV.
Who Is This Jesus and Why Do I Need Him?
- Jesus is our savior, the one who gives us rest. He invites us to bring our burdens to Him, in exchange for rest. Matthew 11:28 (NIV) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
- He is the one who promised us His presence. He alone can be with you 24 hours every day, even in every trial. Matthew 28:20 (NIV) “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
- Jesus gives the kind of peace that no circumstance can take away from us. John 14:27 (NIV) “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
- He overcame the world, so we will be able to endure it. John 16:33 (NIV) “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
- He is our high priest; He offers us help even in our weakness. Hebrews 4:15–16 (NIV) “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses… Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
- Only Jesus can hold us securely. John 10:28 (NIV) “.....no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
- In Jesus Christ we get strengthened, He sustains us. Philippians 4:13 (NKJV) “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
- Jesus is the one who can carry us through hard seasons of life. John 6:37 (NIV) “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away.”
- Jesus is the One who saves from sin. He saves us from the life of sin. Matthew 1:21 (NIV) “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” John 12:47 (NIV) “…I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.”
- When you accept Jesus into your life as your Lord and Savior, He’ll live in you, helping you live a fruitful and fulfilled life. A life fulfilling purpose. John 15:4 (NIV) “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
Why not accept Jesus into your life today? He loves you and cares for you more deeply than anyone else ever could. If you let Him, He’ll help you make healing a habit. Life happens to everyone, but with Jesus in your life, you will ride on the storms of life. Healing will not just be a destination; it’ll be your habitation. If you’re ready to accept Jesus Christ into your life, say the prayer below.
A Prayer to Receive Jesus into Your Life
Dear Jesus, I come to you today, and I acknowledge that I’m a sinner.
Please come into my life and save me from sin.
Heal me of all my hurt and hang-ups.
Help me heal and make healing my habitation.
In Jesus name I pray.
Amen.
If you said that prayer, congratulations, welcome to the family of Jesus Christ. Below are other prayers that can be of help.
A Prayer for Difficult Times
Dear Jesus,
You promised that You are with me always, even to the end of the age.
In the middle of what feels heavy, uncertain, and overwhelming, I anchor my heart in that truth.
You said, “Come to Me, all who are weary,”
So I come, with my burdens, my questions, my fatigue, and my hope.
Give rest to the parts of me that are tired from carrying what only You can hold.
You spoke peace over troubled hearts, and today I receive that peace, not the fragile kind the world gives, but the deep, steady peace that only You can breathe into me.
You told me that in this world I would have trouble, but You also declared that You have overcome it.
Help me live from Your victory, not my fear.
You are the High Priest who understands my weakness, so I draw near to Your throne of grace to find mercy and help in this very moment of need.
Hold me securely in Your hands, the hands that no one can snatch me from. Strengthen me where I feel weak. Lift me where I feel low. Steady me where I feel shaken.
Be close to my broken places. Heal what hurts. Restore what’s been lost. Carry what I cannot.
You are my refuge and my ever‑present help in trouble.
Teach me to trust the rhythm of Your presence more than the noise of my circumstances.
Jesus, thank You for being here; in the breaking, in the silence, in the rebuilding, in the healing, in the journey.
I rest in You.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
Below is a shorter version of the prayer above. You can use it as a daily prayer.
Daily Prayer
Dear Jesus,
Be my peace today.
Carry what I can’t.
Strengthen what feels weak.
Steady what feels shaken.
Fill me with Your rest,
Your presence,
Your courage, and Your unfailing love.
You are with me, always.
In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.
